Law Enforcement Guide
Last updated: March 12, 2026
This guide is intended for law enforcement officials seeking information about SimpleSafeCloud user accounts. SimpleSafeCloud cooperates with law enforcement in accordance with applicable law.
Important — Zero-Knowledge Encryption: SimpleSafeCloud uses end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption. All files are encrypted on the user's device before upload. We do not possess encryption keys and cannot decrypt or access file contents under any circumstances, including in response to legal process.
Data We Can Provide
Subject to valid legal process, we can provide the following account information:
- Account holder name and email address
- Account creation date
- Subscription plan and payment history
- IP addresses associated with account activity
- Timestamps of uploads, downloads, and logins
- File metadata (encrypted file names, sizes, upload dates)
- Share link creation dates and access logs
- Billing information (via Stripe)
Data We Cannot Provide
Due to our zero-knowledge encryption architecture, we cannot provide:
- Decrypted file contents — files are encrypted client-side and we do not hold encryption keys
- Decrypted file names — file names are encrypted along with content
- User passwords or encryption keys
- Contents of encrypted notes or messages stored on our platform
Legal Process Requirements
Subpoena
A valid subpoena is required for basic subscriber information (name, email, IP addresses, account dates, billing info).
Court Order
A court order under 18 U.S.C. §2703(d) is required for transactional records such as file metadata, share link logs, and detailed access records.
Search Warrant
A search warrant issued by a court of competent jurisdiction is required for stored content. Note that due to zero-knowledge encryption, we can only provide encrypted data — we cannot decrypt it.
Preservation Requests
We accept preservation requests pursuant to 18 U.S.C. §2703(f). Upon receipt of a valid preservation request, we will preserve available account records for 90 days, renewable upon request.
Emergency Disclosure
In cases involving imminent danger of death or serious physical injury, we may voluntarily disclose available information to law enforcement without legal process, pursuant to 18 U.S.C. §2702(b)(8) and (c)(4). Emergency requests should include:
- Nature of the emergency
- Identity of the person(s) at risk
- Specific account information or data requested
- Contact information for the requesting officer, including badge number, agency, and direct phone number
